Summary Shekhar is the son of traditional Hindu parents in a seaside village. He is studying journalism in Bombay and returns to his village where he falls in love with Shaila Bano a Muslim schoolgirl who returns his love. A marriage proposal is vehemently opposed by the lovers' fathers, so Shekhar leaves for Bombay. Shaila escapes the village and joins Shekhar. The two get married and have twins, Kabir and Kamal, raising them in both religions. Meanwhile, in India, religious extremism launches each community against the other, causing riots. The growing tension threatens to bring tragedy to the family
