Genre: Comedy
Length:
(2007) - Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Lara Dutta, Bobby Deol
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom
Summary
Super starry cast, extremely catchy title song with three different versions, beautifuuly choregraphed songs, expensive styling of stars, huge sets, good camera work and yet the film fails miserably to make an impact. The credit goes to loose script, poor editing and aimless story moving towards no end.
Although Shaad Ali has tried to explore a very new to Bollywood style of film making, he fails to carry the loose script in manner which can keep the people glued to the screen.
Amitabh (Bulla Man) who plays sutradhar in the film is the first one to appear on screen and keeps appearing throught the film connecting the scenes and narrating the sequence through the title song. This being a realtively new concept, Shaad Ali could've used it beautifully, if the initial part of the film was edited with a little more pain and intelligence.
The whole film moves like a play in the first half, with Abhishek Bachchan (Rikki Thukral) and Preity Zinta (Alvira Khan), who plays an upmarket british Pakistani, narrating their love stories. The two characters have then shown to fall in love with each other and it is revealed that their love stories were actually cooked up by both of them.
The film then moves at a little better pace to show how they chase each other and ultimatley confess their love. In between the sequences, you see Big Bachchan dancing with a crew of dancers narrating the events.
Lara Dutta and Bobby Deol are good as Satvinder aka Steve and Anaida aka Laila. Both of them share the screen space equally well with Small Bachchan and Preity.
Some of the song sequences in the film look too stuffed and give the audiences a break to visit the washroom. Except for all the versions of the title song, none of the songs leave an impact. Vaibhavi Mechant scores full points for choreographing such beautiful sequences. She's good even in yet another stuffed song sequence filmed on Pretiy and Abhishek and shot in Delhi and Agra.
Camera work is also good, Anurag Kashyap has done a good job with dialogues, but story development by him was not somenthing of his standard.
Wonder how Shaad must have felt after watching the first print of the film. The film just moves like a boring fairy tale of cooked up love stories.
Shaad, who has made a brilliant film as Saathiya, could've given a very good film again. But unexpectedly, he fails to repeat his talent and creates a disaster instead.
Jhoom Barabar may prove to be a one time watch for the title song and its different versions and Abhishek, Bobby, Lara and Preity, but surely Shaad can and should come up with soemthing better next time. Written by Kartika
