Guru
Summary
The story traces the meteoric rise of Gurukant Desai, from a villager in Gujarat to a business tycoon. Ambitious since birth, Guru, the son of a school master, goes to Turkey, after failing in his exams. Following a brief stint there, he returns to his village full of ideas.
He marries Sujatha his friend's sister, more for the money than for any love. With her in tow, he leaves for Mumbai. Staying in a chawl, Guru slowly but surely rises into the business world, from small trader to one of the leading industrial houses in the country. He uses all means - fair and unfair, to reach the top. During his journey to the top, he befriends the owner of a newspaper and his paralysed grand-daughter. But as he grows in stature, using illegal more than legal means, the owner and the newspaper turn against Guru.
The job of exposing Guru's fraud is given to a young reporter Shyam, who is in love with Vidya. In spite of all opposition, Guru continues to rise, till an enquiry commision is appointed to look into the irregularities committed by him and his companies. The public anger too turns against him, and it is this stress that results in Guru getting a paralytic stroke. The climax of the film is a courtroom drama, where Guru argues about promoting Indian interests and taking India ahead, and is let off with a slap on his wrists
