Summary

Om Shanti Om tells the story of Om and Shanti. Om is a junior artist in the 70s. Shanti is the reigning superstar. He is her biggest fan. He is in love with her. Om dreams of being a superstar, but an incident changes his life forever. Om dies in a mishap, but is reborn into the present day. He attempts to discover the mystery of his demise. Haunted by memories of his past life and his true love, Om attempts to solve the mystery of his death, and also reunite with Shanti, the love of his past life

Om goes to meet Pappu and Bela, Om’s mother. He decides to remake the film Om Shanti Om with Mukesh as a way to trap him into confessing for his crime. During the audition for the role of Shanti, the crew meets Sandy or Sandhya, a look-a-like of Shantipriya. They take Mukesh to the burnt film set (where he killed Shantipriya) to announce the beginning of the film. Here, Om tries to re-enact the whole murder with the help of the new cast of Om Shanti Om. Sandy often appears to make Mukesh believe that Shanti has turned into a ghost.

However, Mukesh comes to know about the plan. Suddenly a chandelier hits Mukesh's head at the music launch of Om Shanti Om, knocking him unconscious. After he wakes up, he finds there is no one there except him and Om. Om faces Mukesh and they start fighting. Sandy (as the audience are led to believe) appears and starts to speak lines which were not part of their plan, lines that nobody knew about. She reveals that Mukesh came back after burning the set to take care of Shantipriya's body, who was still breathing at the time. Mukesh buried Shantipriya alive in the sets floor directly beneath the chandelier where she eventually died. Om realizes that she is actually Shanti's ghost after the real Sandy enters from the front door. The ghost Shanti kills Mukesh by making a chandelier fall on him. At the end, Om sees the ghost of Shanti tearfully bid him good-bye. She runs up the stairs and disappears. It is implied that Om and Sandy (who is not the reincarnation of Shantipriya) get together in the end.

The director Farah Khan had approached Aamir Khan for item song in Om Shanti Om. In fact, it was Farah's desire to bring Sanjay Dutt, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan, together on-screen for the first time ever. However, Aamir Khan was unable to shoot for the film, since he was busy shooting his film Taare Zameen Par Farah Khan wanted singer Shakira to make a special appearance in this film by performing a song. Farah choreographed Shakira's 2006 MTV Music Video Awards performance and knew that she was a huge Bollywood fan. Due to scheduling, Shakira was not able to participate in the film This film is said to be inspired by the Hollywood movie, Chances Are, where a man is reincarnated and instantaneously attempts to find the wife from his previous life. Composer A. R. Rahman opted out of this movie, as T-Series did not agree to share the copyrights of music with him and the lyricist Om Shanti Om landed into a controversy with veteran actor Manoj Kumar, for showing him in a bad taste.
